Nitrile, latex or vinyl: choosing an examination glove
Barrier performance, allergy risk, chemical splash and the real cost per procedure rather than cost per box.

Examination gloves are the highest-volume consumable most facilities buy, which makes them the line most often decided on box price alone. Box price is the wrong unit. The number that matters is cost per procedure completed without a re-glove.
The three materials, honestly compared
Nitrile
Synthetic, so no natural rubber latex proteins and no latex allergy risk. Good puncture resistance, good chemical splash resistance across a wide range of substances, and it tends to tear visibly rather than fail invisibly — which is useful, because you find out. Modern nitrile has largely closed the old tactile-sensitivity gap. It is the default for most clinical work now.
Latex
Natural rubber. Still the benchmark for fit, elasticity and tactile feedback, and it self-seals slightly around a small puncture. The problem is protein allergy, which affects both staff and patients and is a sensitisation risk that increases with exposure. Most facilities have moved to nitrile for routine work and retain latex only where a specific clinician requires it.
Vinyl
PVC-based, no latex proteins, and the cheapest per box. It is also the least elastic, fits loosely, and barrier integrity degrades more quickly with movement and stretching. Reasonable for short, low-risk, non-contact tasks — food handling, some housekeeping, brief non-invasive contact. Not the glove for a procedure with blood or body fluid exposure.
Powdered against powder-free
Powder-free is now the norm in clinical settings. Powder aerosolises, carries latex proteins, irritates airways, and is a contamination risk in wound and surgical contexts. If a powdered glove is quoted at an attractive price, ask why.
Reading the barrier claim
Ask suppliers for the AQL (acceptable quality level) for pinholes on the specific glove being quoted — a lower number means a tighter pinhole standard. Ask whether the glove is tested and marked for use as a medical examination glove, and separately whether it carries any chemical permeation data if it will be used with chemicals. A glove can be excellent for clinical work and inadequate for handling a concentrate.
Chemical handling is a different question
Thin examination gloves are splash protection, not immersion protection. If staff decant, dilute or mix chemicals, specify a thicker chemical-resistant glove and check the breakthrough time for the specific chemical on the manufacturer's chart. A glove that resists one solvent may fail quickly against another.
Sizing and fit — where the money actually goes
Undersized gloves tear at the thumb web and finger tips; oversized gloves snag and lose tactile control. Both cause re-gloving, and re-gloving is the hidden cost. Stock a genuine size spread rather than ordering mostly medium, and count the boxes issued per department for a month before you settle the standing order.
Working out cost per procedure
Take the box price, divide by gloves per box, multiply by gloves actually consumed per procedure — including failures and double-gloving where it is practised. A cheaper glove that requires a second pair on a quarter of procedures is not cheaper. This calculation frequently reverses a purchasing decision.
